Nanny Resignation Letter

There are many reasons that nannies resign from their jobs, from children growing up to families moving away to financial difficulties that no longer allow for paying a nanny’s salary. Regardless of the reason for the resignation, it is important for a professional nanny, particularly one who needs a reference, to compose a thoughtful, polite letter of resignation. The letter should include the last day the nanny can work and a sincere expression of gratitude.

Format and Content

A declaration of fondness for the children should be included in the nanny resignation letter format.In the event the nanny is leaving on bad terms, the letter should still be polite and professional. It is usually a bad idea to put rude and angry comments in a document that can be preserved and can possibly resurface to be used against you later. The high road is the best one to take with resignation letters.

This nanny resignation letter sample is from a person who is currently working as a nanny but is returning to college to complete her Bachelor’s degree and pursue a job as an elementary school teacher. She is giving a month’s notice and is offering to help train a new nanny.

Dear Mrs. Vanderbilt:

It is with sadness that I resign my position as the nanny for your three wonderful children. As I discussed with you previously, I applied for the Early Childhood Education Program at ABC University to finish my Bachelor’s degree and pursue my goal of being an elementary school teacher. I have just received official acceptance to the program and my first class starts September 9; therefore I must make my last day September 6 or before.

I am happy to do anything I can to help you find a suitable nanny for the children, and of course I am more than willing to continue working until your new nanny is up to speed. It would be my pleasure to spend time with any nanny that you hire along with the children to help them adjust to each other if that is something that you would like. It is so important to me that your children have a calm and healthy transition from me to their new nanny.

I want to say what a pleasure it has been taking care of your children for the last 4 years. They are bright, well-behaved children, each with their own special talents. I am sorry that I will not be there for them every day moving forward. This has been a heart wrenching decision, but I believe I must move ahead in my career. I appreciate your encouragement when I first told you that I was considering returning to college to complete my degree. Your kind words motivated me and helped me muster the courage to make a firm decision and complete the college application.

I wish you and your children all the best in the years to come, and I hope it will be acceptable for me to visit you all occasionally as long as it will not upset them. I also want to thank you for employing me these past 4 years. It has been a privilege getting to know and working for you and your family, and the experience has been one of the most enriching of my life. I am eternally grateful.
