A good teacher can make a world of difference in the life of a child by taking an interest in the child, noticing any struggles, both academic and personal, and taking the time to work with the child before and after school on any problem areas. A teacher appreciation letter from a student usually means a great deal to the teacher because it emphasizes that all of the extra effort is worthwhile.

Format and Content

It is a good idea to send a copy of an appreciation letter to the teacher’s principal so that the letter will become part of the teacher’s employment file. A teacher appreciation letter from a student format should list ways in which the teacher helped the child achieve success in his or her academic career. The letter can be written in chronological order if there were multiple ways in which the teacher helped the student.

Dear Mrs. Harrison,

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for being an absolutely amazing teacher and making such a positive impact on me the last 3 years of my high school career. From Accelerated Algebra to Honors Trigonometry to Advanced Placement Calculus, I do not think I would have made it through high school math without you. As you know, I have struggled since elementary school with mathematical concepts. The many extra hours you spent with me one-on-one before and after school brought everything together for me so that math finally clicked. Passing the national AP Calculus test along with earning strong math scores on the SAT has helped me tremendously in college.

I am following my dream and majoring in musical theater at ABC University. I have always wanted to study music and theater and have grown up with the attitude that I would have no use for any form of math. How very mistaken I was. I use advanced mathematical concepts in my college courses almost every day. For example, an understanding of various types of mathematics is necessary when studying music theory, writing music, working on set design and drawing lighting and elevation plans. I know I would not be where I am today without your patience and determination in teaching me algebra, trig and calculus.

I could not let another year go by without contacting you and letting you know what a positive difference you have made in my life, my college career and my future success.You are a very gifted teacher and I feel extremely fortunate to have had you for a high school teacher in my 3 upper level math courses. I hope the students you have this year realize how lucky they are to experience your wonderful teaching abilities.
