Efficient Shift Manager Job Description

A shift manager is a middle management position, with the responsibility of overseeing a number of subordinate employees during a certain period of time. Position Description

A shift manager reports to an upper level manager, but oversees lower level staff as well, making sure that all employees show up for work, all assigned tasks are completed, customers are happy, and all business runs smoothly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Shift Manager

  • Assigns tasks to employees on shift.
  • Calls in replacements in the event of an employee call-in or no-show.
  • Addresses and resolves customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Cleans and organizes work area (e.g. retail space, restaurant, bar, etc.) as needed.
  • Engages with customers to ensure they are satisfied with service and products offered.
  • Promotes specials, sales, and new products or services when relevant.
  • Orders supplies and products when stock runs low.
  • Manages cash intake, counting out registers at regular intervals and tabulating profit at the end of the shift.
  • Reports losses, employee behavioral issues, serious customer complaints, and other significant issues to upper level management.
  • Signs for deliveries.
  • Distributes payroll checks.
  • Adheres to and enforces company policies and guidelines.
  • Enforces the proper disciplinary measures when subordinate employees fail to adhere to company policy.
  • Assists in interviewing applicants for open positions.
  • Oversees employee training sessions.
  • Works with HR to process new employee paperwork.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possesses strong organizational skills and attention to detail, the latter being particularly important when managing cash drawers and registers.
  • Demonstrates authoritative but fair leadership qualities.
  • Should have friendly and calm demeanor.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Must work well with a team.
  • Must be comfortable handling and counting money.
  • Must be able to provide clear instructions to employees.
  • Displays efficiency and strong time-management skills.
  • Must be able to lift and move boxes of relevant supplies.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent recommended.
  • Work experience in relevant industry (e.g. retail, food service, casino, etc.) is required.
  • On or off-site management training prior to start date required.
  • Should be willing to undergo periodic customer service and management training to stay abreast of the latest company policies and managerial strategies.

Work Environment

  • The majority of shift time will be spent working with employees and customers in the store, restaurant, casino floor, or bar.
  • Remaining time will be spent in a managerial office in the work space, in order to count down register drawers or make necessary phone calls.
  • Must be on time and remain on site for entire shift.
  • Should be ready to arrive early and stay late for any work prep, cleanup, and/or money-counting purposes.
  • Should wear attire appropriate to work environment, such as nametag and shirt with a company logo in retail settings.

Salary

  • Starting salaries for shift managers average $50,000 for restaurant and retail positions.
  • Salaries for casino or high-end store positions average $60,000.
