Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Clinical Supervisor

  • Helps ensure that a medical facility and its staff maintain a high level of ethical and professional standards.
  • Works to improve healthcare services.
  • Looks for ways to streamline and enhance administrative operations.
  • Counsels and trains newly hired clinical staff.
  • Consults with and supports clinical staff in the efforts to serve patients.
  • Assists clinical workers in obtaining more education, additional certifications and helps them find ways to enhance their skills and improve their chances of career advancement.
  • Helps improve communication among employees in a clinical environment.
  • Increases worker retention rates.
  • Enhances quality of a healthcare facility’s service offerings.
  • Helps plan budgets and establish fees for services.
  • Authorizes certain expenditures.
  • Coordinates certain financial reports.
  • Assists in the planning and promoting of health programs for the community.
  • Develops and implements some of the policies and procedures for the medical facility.
  • Recruits, hires and trains clinical staff.
  • Evaluates the job performances of clinical personnel.
  • Schedules clinical staff according to workloads and available equipment and space.
  • Stays up-to-date on a plethora of factors that affect the performance of a healthcare facility including advancements in diagnostic equipment, newly approved medications, upgraded computer technology, new and amended government regulations and changes in health insurance products.
  • Attends interdepartmental meetings.
  • Identifies quality assurance and risk management issues and brings them to the attention of the appropriate managers.
  • Monitors the use of resources to determine when there is a need for additional staff.
  • Inspects the facility to recommend building modifications or changes in processes to ensure patient safety.
  • Ensures that all clinical staff is accurately notating patients’ electronic health records.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or other behavior-related program.
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • Ph.D. in Psychology, Counseling Education or related field.
  • On-the-job training and supervisory experience.
  • Certification and licensing for the specific state of employment.

Work Environment

  • Time is spent walking from area to area making sure everything is functioning properly.
  • Time is spent in meetings for the purpose of discussing incidents and issues that need to be resolved to help the facility run more efficiently.
  • Must be willing to travel to patients homes when necessary.
  • Must be able to work normal weekday hours Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm plus some evenings and weekends when necessary.

Salary

  • Salaries range from $55,000 to $85,000 depending on education, years of experience and the location of the facility.
