It’s clear that a number of details contribute to the general “mood” of any resume. Recruiters evaluate the cohesion of the document, its official clearly structured layout, flawless language, and contents suitable for the position. One huge injustice of this document is the discrepancy between the time it takes you to compose one and humble 20-30 seconds a hiring manager spends on resume reading. Because of this fact you just can’t allow yourself to make a mistake as it may cost pretty much.
Having scanned the most frequent and together with this the least obvious mistakes, we present to your attention 5 criteria of an ideal resume. The first section to be checked for business appearance is the Profile that includes your name, address, a telephone number and an email. For a person older than 5 it’s quite easy to spell the first two items correctly; a telephone number though must be double checked for the odd numbers and remember to mention phone code of the city if you apply for the position in another town. Email address can also let you down. Professionals recommend creating a separate mail-box for job notifications and try to make the address sound impersonal. The future employer doesn’t need to know your family pet name or friendly nickname.
The second paragraph of the resume is the Objective lines. This section is necessary for the college graduates or applicants with no experience; it will also come to aid for those who have decided to change the job field. In other cases the Objective section is substituted for the Summary of Qualifications. The Objective issue, being a start point of the whole resume, must present a hook that will enable the applicant to stand out among the rivals. The correct strategy is to stress not your desire to get the job, but the profit you may bring to the company. It’s difficult to tell about yourself and not to seem too self-concerned, but still it’s possible- consider the following example: “To apply the university knowledge obtained in the summer internship at IT Company on the entry position of the PR-manager to develop communication skills and contribute to the growth of the company”.
The above mentioned Summary of Qualifications is a nice resume opening for more experienced applicants, who have a number of accomplishments to attract the hiring manager’s attention. Mind that unlikely to succeed is the section that concentrates on the duties without accomplishments, or is too long – in this case it’s better to present only a number of achievements and bullet-list them. As well as in Objective section it’s worth remembering that an employer always looks for the benefit a new employee can bring to his company.
Close in the contents to the previous section is Work Experience issue that should highlight how the positive results were achieved and how the employer can benefit from your skills. Don’t turn this section into the plain duty description, especially those not concerning the future position. Resume guides prompt to use action verbs to enumerate successfully fulfilled duties and don’t forget to mention the company you worked for, as its fame may raise the chances to get the job. A good Work Experience section should look like this:
TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
Morrison Secondary School (7th grade) Colorado (2005-present)
*Student Teacher, Grade 6
-Designed and implemented lesson plans for children at different learning levels.
-Utilized a variety of lesson methods including cooperative learning, projects, discussion, games and discovery.
-Participated in school events such as PTO, Open House, faculty meetings, and team leader meetings.
The last but not the least is the Education paragraph that usually doesn’t occupy much of the resume space for the experienced workers who are not supposed to center on the school education history or course works. Even in this relatively simple section mistakes are rather frequent, so remember NOT to abbreviate the name of the university or list irrelevant college\university activities.
If you have already written a successful from your point of view resume, still check it for consistency as there are no limits for bringing the resume to perfection.
