Appreciative Resignation Letter

If you have enjoyed your job and had a great relationship with your boss and coworkers, you may be a bit sad when you have to hand in your resignation for some reason. One good thing you can do is to write an appreciative resignation letter to send in to your boss, expressing in a gracious way how much you have enjoyed your job and all of the opportunities it gave you. This is a great way to help ensure that your employers know you hold only good will toward them and wish to exit gracefully without burning any bridges.

Format and Content

Since you want to express your sincere appreciation to your employers while also remaining a successful businessperson, you should try to make your appreciative resignation letter format a dignified and professional yet gracious one. In your first paragraph, let your employers know of your resignation. Your employers may wish to follow up with you or even stay in touch as friends, so remember to include your phone number and email address. Use your third paragraph to give your sincere thanks and gratitude for the great work environment and relationships. Give your signature and the date.

Sample

If you need to come up with the right words to express your appreciation to your employers, looking at an example is a great way to get some ideas. Here is an appreciative resignation letter sample from an assistant manager of a small company who is very grateful for all of the experience he has earned and the friendly cooperation. Although he expresses this nicely, he also does not neglect professionalism throughout the letter.

Dear Ms. Holden,

I am just writing this letter to inform you that unfortunately I am resigning from my position as assistant manager at ABC Company. I have recently been given a great offer to manage a new company which I believe will help me to attain more of my career goals and I have decided to accept, though I am reluctant to leave the great work environment at ABC Company. My last day of work will be October 15, 2014, so please accept this letter as my two weeks’ notice of resignation. I appreciate your patience and cooperation in this matter.

I truly regret any inconvenience that my resignation may cause, and hope to assist in any way I can in preparing a replacement to take over my duties and anything else that may be required. Please call me at (555)-555-5555 or email me at [email] if you would like to discuss this further.

I am truly grateful for all of the great experience and opportunities I have gained by working at ABC Company and will miss all of the team members. I appreciate the cooperation of all the staff and hope that my future experiences will go as well. I wish everyone at ABC Company every success and thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Joseph Hagen
