Sample Faculty Reference Letter

Posted in Sample Employment Reference Letters

An individual who is applying to be on the faculty of any educational facility may need a letter of referral to help land a job. The letter can be used for the benefit of a person who is a public school teacher, a college professor, a teacher at a private school or any school that specializes in teaching one subject or skill such as art, foreign language, ballet, gourmet cooking or just about any craft.

Format and Content

Documentation of an applicant’s teaching experience is an important part of the faculty reference letter format. The letter should include the applicant’s formal education, number of years of experience and any schools in which the individual has served on the faculty. This can include work as a guest instructor at institutions where master classes are taught to other instructors. The letter should be written by someone who is familiar with the applicant’s knowledge and abilities.

Sample

This faculty reference letter sample is from the director of a large metropolitan ballet company. It is written on behalf of a dancer who wishes to retire from the performing and touring world and teach ballet to young students. The letter is for the director of a private ballet school.

Dear Madame Tremaine:

It is with mixed emotions that I refer one of our principle dancers, Diana Parker, to you to fill your open position of master teacher at XYZ Regional School of Ballet. As you know, Diana has enjoyed a highly celebrated career here at ABC Ballet Theater for the last 6 years. Prior to her position here in New York at ABC she has danced with companies in London, Milan, San Francisco and Philadelphia. We will miss her exuberant performances and innovative choreography techniques as will our audiences; however we support Diana as she moves on to the next chapter of her life.

Diana has endured a grueling schedule of regional performances as well as national and world tours. She has indicated that she would like to start a family with her husband and at this point in her life would like to dance in an environment that does not require extensive travel. She would appreciate the opportunity to teach aspiring dancers at your Connecticut location of XYZ Regional. As your school is one from which ABC regularly hires new dancers, I believe Diana would be an excellent fit for your faculty. She will know from season to season what ABC is looking for in terms of performers and apprentices which will be advantageous for your dancers and your school.

I have observed Diana as she teaches her personal choreography to dancers and apprentices and she is extremely diligent and professional. Diana is a perfectionist as most performers are; however she demonstrates the ability to encourage young dancers during her instruction rather than intimidate them. I hope that you will consider hiring Diana Parker for the available position on your faculty. Should you wish to discuss her qualifications further I can be reached at 555-555-5555 or via email at [email protected]

Warm Regards,

Gregory Carlson
