Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Responsibilities and Duties

Decide on images to include for identifying differences between healthy and pathological areas.

Adjust equipment if required and observe screen during scan to ensure image produced is satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.

Observe and provide care for patients throughout examinations to comfort them.

Write sonogram and oral or written summary of technical findings to physician for use in medical diagnosis.

Utilize ultrasound equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape and composition of blood, organs, tissues and bodily masses such as fluid accumulations.

Decide on apt equipment settings and adjust patient positions to obtain best sites and angles.

Diagnose and determine whether scope of exam should be extended, based on findings.

Process and develop code film from procedures and complete appropriate documentation.

Attain and record accurate patient history, prior test results and information from physical examinations.

Prepare patient for sonography exam by explaining procedure, transferring them to ultrasound table, scrubbing skin, applying gel and positioning them properly.

Record and store suitable images, using camera unit connected to ultrasound equipment.

Tutor and train students and other medical sonographers.

Coordinate with physicians and other health-care team members for work and providing assistance during invasive procedures.

Maintain records having patient information, sonographs and interpretations.

Manage correspondence files, publications and regulations, and quality assurance records.
