Position Description
A stock clerk has the task of ensuring that items in a stock room are transferred to the appropriate location within a retail store or other company so that floor inventory can remain strong and customers can get the products they want when they want them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Stock Clerk
•Receives and unpacks merchandise.
•Marks items with prices and stocks shelves.
•Assists customers with transferring large packages to their vehicles.
•Counts and stores items to help maintain an adequate inventory.
•Ensures that merchandise is stored in an orderly manner and is easily accessible when store shelves need to be replenished.
•Inspects new stock for damages or defects and goes through the proper channels to have the stock returned.
•Labels stock for identification purposes.
•Keeps detailed records of merchandise that is in and out of stock as well as maintains reports for supervisors.
•Assists customers with finding merchandise when working on a retail floor.
•Answers customer questions regarding items that are in or out of stock.
•Uses technology like electronic guns that place price stickers on merchandise or handheld tracking scanning to make sure stock is being stored or displayed in the right place.

Education and Experience
•High School diploma.
•Associate’s degree in computer science.
•Certificate from vocational or technical school in inventory control.
•Experience in bookkeeping.
•Company training program specific to inventory.

Work Environment
•Lifts heavy boxes and other containers for storage on high shelves in a warehouse.
•Works various shifts including evenings and weekends when large shipments arrive and during high demand times like holidays.
•Endures exposure to extreme seasonal temperatures on loading docks and in large warehouses or storage facilities.
•Uses potentially hazardous equipment such as box cutters.
•Sustains minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, abrasions and muscle strains.

•A stock clerk typically earns an annual income of $18,000 to $28,000 depending on years of experience, job performance, the level of technological knowledge that is required to do the job and the size of the company.
•Hourly wages, particularly for part-time, seasonal employees range from $9 to $15 an hour.
