The job of a Staff Accountant involves managing finances of clients or companies by handling tasks such as bill payments, filing taxes, cost cutting, collections, budgeting, asset management, and other accounting tasks. They find work in legal firms, banks, medical offices, government agencies and other industries.

Education/Experience Requirements A successful candidate must possess at least an associate’s degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, administration, mathematics or a related field. Some states may require certification.

Specific work elements Maintaining inventories, completing and submitting tax forms; performing personal bookkeeping; computing deductions for social security and income taxes; preparing purchase orders or expense reports; working on spreadsheets or other specialized accounting programs to record and compute debit, credit and total accounts; compiling financial records; editing discrepancies and errors found in records; performing various financial calculations such as balances, equity, discounts, amounts due, and others; preparing bank deposits; receiving and recording checks, vouchers and cash; reconciling records of bank transactions; performing clerical duties such as filing, handling phone calls and other correspondence; monitoring status of loans; and ensuring all financial transactions of a company comply with federal, state and company policies, regulations and procedures.
