Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Service Clerk
•Welcomes customers as they enter the store.
•Inquires as to the needs of each customer.
•Directs customers to particular items around the store.

•Rings up purchases at the register.
•Processes refunds and returns.
•Promotes sale items.
•Maintains the neat and organized appearance of the register area and the front end of the store.
•Addresses and resolves customer complaints.
•Reports any thefts or problems to the store manager.
•Ensures that the register draws have enough money.
•Replaces register tape.
•Counts out register drawer at the end of a shift.
•Assists in cleaning the store following a closing shift.

Education and Experience
Most service clerks hold a high school diploma or GED, though some are working toward a degree during their time of employment. Many have prior experience in the retail or customer service industry, and nearly all service clerks must complete company mandated customer service training prior to their start date.

Work Environment
A service clerk spends the majority of a shift standing at a register or walking through the store to ensure all customers have been helped. Some lifting of moderately heavy items may also be required when restocking inventory. Shifts vary from day to night depending on the needs of the store, and workweeks for full-time clerks typically follow the standard 40-hour format.
