On-the-job training is typically required no matter what business a sandwich artist finds employment in. Ongoing training in food safety and sanitation are normally required once or twice each year.

Work Environment

Most duties performed by a sandwich artist are done while standing on hard surfaces. These individuals may work anywhere from two to twelve hours in a typical day, with only short break periods for meals given throughout. They may be exposed to heat from ovens or grilling equipment and cold from refrigerators and freezers. Work may be performed during the day, at night, or on the weekends. Sandwich artists may work either full or part time, and may sometimes be called to work on very short notice.

Salary

The salary of a sandwich artist depends on the type of establishment and the amount of experience one has. Many positions begin at around $7.25 per hour, and may increase to between $9.00 and $10.00 after time. Those who work for fast food restaurants tend to make less than those who work at family-owned delicatessens or catering services do.
