The field service technician job description calls for an individual who is able to manage multiple projects at the same time and travel to various places to provide services. These individuals work in a wide variety of settings including for cable companies, telephone companies and even vending machine providers.

Position Description
A field service technician is a mobile repair person who travels from location to location—both businesses and residences—to repair various forms of equipment, machinery and electronics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Field Service Technician
•Tests and repairs equipment at the customer’s site.
•Provides on-site commissioning and installation of various forms of equipment.
•Confirms that machinery and instruments function normally and provides contract or warranty repair or replacement on-site when necessary.
•Trains customers on start-up, operation and maintenance of various pieces of equipment.
•Provides customers with telephone numbers and other contact information for support and troubleshooting in the future.
•Performs other duties as assigned to him or her by the service manager including but not limited to sales and service.
•Travels to customer locations as necessary to provide service.
•Attends regular ongoing education as scheduled by the employer or manufacturer of equipment.
•Fills out service forms and provides customers with statements when required.
•Collects fees for repairs from customers before leaving the premises.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Possesses knowledge of general electronics and machinery.
•Demonstrates the ability to work with a specific sort of equipment.
•Is able to handle multiple tasks within a single day; does not allow longer-than-expected service calls to cause frustration or major setbacks.
•Shows the ability to work independently without direct supervision.
•Possesses a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
•Shows excellent customer service skills and the ability to diagnose issues through non-technical descriptions that are provided by customers.

Education and Experience
A field service technician can work in a huge variety of settings, so the amount of education that is required differs. Individuals who work with cable companies, landline telephone companies, vending machine companies or with other simple machines receive all of their training on the job, but a high school diploma or GED is required. However, those who work with more complex systems may be required to earn a certificate from a technical school or community college. Finally, a field service technician working in an engineering setting may be required to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a similar field.

Work Environment
A field service technician may work in a climate-controlled environment if he or she is required to provide maintenance and repair for certain types of equipment, but he or she may also be required to work outdoors in some settings. Regardless of this, all field service technicians will spend a great deal of time travelling. Physical demands also vary based upon the size of the equipment and its location. While most work standard 40-hour, five-day workweeks, they will often take turns being on-call during the off-hours to provide services to customers in emergencies.

It is important to consider that those who work in highly technical fields such as diesel engine repair will earn much more than their counterparts.
