A Chief Technology Officer is responsible for developing and implementing technology programs in a business organization. He or she is also responsible for handling and successfully executing company processes through development and management of the company’s web presence.
A chief technology officer deals with strategy and planning by identifying opportunities and corresponding risks for providing web-based business as part of company’s services. He or she initiates strategic planning, setting timeframes for the development, evaluation and implementation of web-based services. A chief technology officer assures development and carrying out of information security plan which protects integrity and confidentiality. A chief technology officer is also responsible in operational management by being updated with technology standards, trending, upcoming technologies and software development; resolving company technical difficulties on time and in a cost-effective manner; imparting and educating the company’s investors, staff, customers and partners in relation to the company’s vision, challenges and opportunities, and ensuring the company’s services and internal process comply with applicable laws and regulations for security and privacy.
Education and Training Requirements
To become a chief technology officer, one must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS) or Information Science, with minimum of 10 years working experiencing preferred.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
To become a successful chief technology officer, one must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. He or she should have strong interpersonal and leadership abilities, which can execute effective negotiation and vendor management skills. A chief technology officer can easily adapt to quick changing environments and technical knowledge in web systems development, architecture and design.
A chief technology officer is provided with comfortable and clean offices. He or she may experience extended office hours to comply with meeting deadlines or resolving technical problems.
A chief technology officer’s income will base on the number of years of experience, educational attainment, location and employer, usually ranging between $150,000 and $200,000 per annum. A CTO with a bachelor’s degree in computer science has an income ranging from $100,000 to $150,000 per year, with a master’s degree in computer science salary can range from $150,000 to $200,000 per year, and income between $125,000 to $250,000 per year or more for CTO with a doctorate degree.
