Summary

The airport project manager’s main duties include the planning, directing, and coordinating of the operations, construction, and maintenance of all airport facilities. They have to ensure that all these activities comply with the government laws, policies, rules, and regulations. A project manager may work closely with a project administrator, who is in charge of the monitoring of the project plan.

Duties

An airport project manager is responsible for managing land side projects and management activities for within the airport, which include coordinating the work of contractors and designers, advising clients in relation to their selection of consultants, reviewing and commenting on design submittals; and recommending the most appropriate planning options. managing of projects assigned to them by helping client staff in all stages of the project; coordinating all activities with airport tenants; and interacting and coordinating with government regulatory agencies.

Education and Training Requirements

Candidates seeking to have an airport project managerial position must obtain a bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering. They must also pass the licensure examinations in these fields. Most employers prefer applicants with related experience in project management and design. Although not required, it is recommended that candidates also complete project management certification programs especially within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

An airport project manager is expected to have the ability to assist clients in managing airport development projects. Having an experience with government regulations, building codes and applying these policies in an airport environment are also necessary. Airport project managers must also have a proven ability to manage variety of airport projects and must able to serve as the owner’s representative from planning through completion. Employers prefer airport project managers who are articulate with a professional presence. These managers are also expected to have firm decision-making, organizational, analytical, planning skills, excellent communication and computer skills.

Working Conditions

Airport project managers generally work regular hours, but they may be required to work evenings and weekends to beat deadlines. Those who are self-employed can choose to work flexible hours. Project managers may work with the following: senior managers and chief executives, representatives of their employer’s client groups, staff in departments such as marketing, finance, policy and service delivery, and goods and services suppliers. They may also be expected to work with project administrators, the ones in charge of monitoring the project plan
