A resume cover letter is intended to highlight those skills or qualifications that may not be obvious at first glance when the recipient views your resume. Additionally, a resume cover letter will pique the reader’s interest in your skills, enticing them to take a close look at your resume. Not only does this communication offer the potential employer a deeper look in to what makes you an ideal job candidate, it also gives them a feeling for your communication skills and personality.

1. Use letterhead stationery. You want to make a professional impression; use letterhead that contains your name, address and contact information.

2. Introduce yourself. In the first few sentences of your resume cover letter, introduce yourself and briefly explain what position you are interested in. Also include relevant information about your area of expertise, or that you are a student at ABC College.

3. Explain why you are the ideal candidate for the position. In the main body of your resume cover letter, offer details about your skills and qualifications without duplicating the information on your resume. Describe any special accomplishments or talents that relate directly to the job in question. Your cover letter should explain a bit more in depth the factual data on your resume; this is the first impression an employer will get of you and your skills.

4. Close your resume cover letter. In closing, simply thank the recipient for taking the time to read your cover letter and consider you for the job. Also state that you look forward to securing an interview.
Always proofread your letter and check for spelling or grammar mistakes. Make any necessary changes before mailing or submitting. Nothing makes a bad impression on a potential employer like a resume cover letter that contains errors!

Take this opportunity to further expand on those skills, accomplishments or qualifications that are listed on your resume, but that need further description. Write using an enthusiastic tone, so that the employer can easily see your interest in the job. By demonstrating your most important talents and achievements, and employer will be sure to read your resume.
Thank the recipient for their time and consideration. Let them know that you expect an interview by stating that you look forward to it.
